Michele Plachter Design (MPD) is a residential luxury design firm providing renowned interior design services for almost two decades. The firm is highly respected and backed by the country’s leading contractors, painters, architects, and furniture manufacturers, along with possessing an international network of vendors and suppliers.

MPD specializes in design-build and whole home renovations. Their expertise is maximized when being brought into a project in the early stages of planning. Collaborating with their team of architects and contractors benefits the clients and is always ideal for keeping the house design cohesive. From plumbing fixtures to drapes, MPD ensures every aesthetic detail is considered in order to deliver a seamless and well thought out plan. They also specialize in re-designing a home that needs full interior design and construction updates. When a client moves into a home that doesn’t reflect their tastes or has grown out of what they selected 20 years ago, MPD uses their design wizardry to transform those interiors to create the “Wow” factor that the client is looking for. MPD’s signature style is a curated design tailored to our client’s tastes.

Michele and her team have perfected their design process over many years of working with clients. With press recognition in House Beautiful, Traditional Home, and more, they are known for their commitment to quality and artful touches. From classic to modern to eclectic, each project is unique. Whether you’re drawn to muted colors, unexpected patterns, or edgy accents, Michele emphasizes quality, functionality, and beauty in every project. Intending to keep all their designs timeless, they still display their final outcomes utilizing cutting-edge selections that are fresh and modern.

The designs of MPD’s spaces are unique because their clients are unique. At Michele Plachter Design, their mission is to recreate the souls of their clients in their surroundings. “It’s a joy to see it all come together,” touts Plachter. Michele Plachter Design’s home base is in Philadelphia, and it’s rapidly expanding in the Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach, and Vero Beach Markets. Michele’s clients are CEOs, executives, entrepreneurs, community leaders, empty nesters, young families, art collectors, and urban and suburban dwellers.

Michele Plachter- The Founder and Artistic Director:

Michele is driven by bringing her clients’ dreams to life. With an entrepreneurial spirit, a discerning eye, and a quest to bring more beauty into the world, Michele channeled her natural talents into interior design two decades ago and has never looked back.

Purposeful and conscientious, Michele oversees all client projects and strategically grows her team with the best and brightest talent in design. She has an ability to decipher her client’s personalities into an external environment, and her work has generated numerous awards in customer service and design.

“It’s not about the Michele Plachter look, but our clients look… just better. Our role as designers is to be their partner and collaborate. We gently guide clients out of their comfort zones to introduce elements of design they might not have considered or have been aware of. Those elements tend to be their favorite features in the home when all is said and done,” says Plachter.

Michele’s favorite projects are more about the client she is working with vs. the actual projects themselves. Whether a large or small project, when working with trusting, appreciative and collaborative clients, the projects turn out amazing. One of her recent favorites is a historic home in Haverford that was a complete renovation. The clients wanted to create a classic home that was in keeping with the traditional bones of the house but requested a new and colorful design approach versus what is more expected. For starters, MPD got the job done by utilizing tropical pink wallpaper, high gloss paint, and a vibrant orange grasscloth in the entry. The home is very much classic but feels so fresh and unexpected. They call the look “New Traditional.” It’s a stunner and a perfect representation of the clients themselves—a very happy house. Goal achieved!

Tell us a little about yourself.

I’m a mother of 3 and married for over 25 years to an incredibly supportive (and patient) man. This is a second career for me. After spending many years in the corporate world, I knew I needed to feed my inner artist. I also was a singer for many years and an artist at heart. Some hard times pushed me to take a risk and do what I always wanted to do….create beauty for others in their home.

I pinch myself daily. I truly am doing what I love. Ironically, having a corporate background has been a huge asset when running a company. There are many great interior designers, but you need a solid business background to run a company successfully. Sometimes we don’t know how all of our past experiences will help us navigate the future. It was a cool “Ahhh” moment for me as I internally resented the years I was working in the corporate culture at the time, and yet it was the best experience I could have had for my future endeavors.

What is your current profession, and how did you make that choice?

I am owner, Artistic Director of Michele Plachter Design– I love creating beautiful surroundings for people. Rooms are my canvas, and I love sharing that passion with others. As my company has grown, my role has grown into business development, which I also enjoy. I have a wonderful team and want to ensure I continue to provide a solid workplace for them.

What are some of your goals and dreams for the future?

My ultimate dream is for my husband and me to have the opportunity to watch my kids grow old together and stay healthy doing it….that would be a gift in itself. I would also love to travel more. I haven’t done a lot of that. We both work very hard and don’t take enough time to smell the roses. I need to work on that!

Professionally, I’m working on expanding my business beyond Philadelphia into Florida and beyond. One thing Covid taught me is that businesses can be run successfully from just about anywhere. We live in a digital age, and I have come to recognize how that’s an advantage to business expansion…although nothing will replace face-to-face engagements.

What advice do you have for others who want to live in their calling?

Take risks and learn to get comfortable with feeling uncomfortable. If you want the moon, it isn’t going to be easy, or everyone else would have a moon. Work harder than most. The worst word anyone can say to you is “No.” It’s just a word—big deal. Pick up your big girl/boy pants and carry on, but stay humble and don’t forget what’s really important in life.

How do you maintain your integrity in an otherwise highly competitive and sometimes unscrupulous industry, as business can sometimes be cutthroat?

Great question. I live by integrity and doing the right thing…always. My parents were simple but very moral people. I believe in God and Karma; I don’t mess with either. Sometimes I let people who do the wrong thing get under my skin, but then I breathe and remind myself who I am.

Would you consider yourself a driven person?

Ummmm….yep. Very. I had my 1st job babysitting three kids (including a newborn) at 12 years old and have never stopped. I took a few years off with my 1st child, but I soon realized I missed working. I always made my own way in life. I guess I get fulfillment from being self-reliant and staying busy. My parents were old school, and I had to work for things. I was never handed anything without earning it in some way… and I was an only child! I wish parents today did more of that. Stop giving kids handouts. It never raises a good adult.

     What makes you a powerhouse?

Well, that’s a very nice assumption. I work hard and truly care about my clients and my employees. I think doing the right thing makes people powerhouses. It’s not always easy. I’m also a Gemini and might have a touch of ADD. 😉

What is your source of strength?

I’m not overly religious, but my parents instilled a belief in God that I can’t seem to shake. That little voice inside of me reminds me it will be ok no matter what. My kids, my husband, my dear friends…they are what keep me strong. I have good people in my life, and now and then, when a bad one comes along, I learn amazing life lessons.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? How will you get there?

I would love to build my brand to include more lifestyle elements. I also want to learn to work smarter, not harder, so I can spend more time with my family. I plan on getting there by working on business development and collaborating with my business partners to grow together.

What type of legacy do you wish to leave?

All of my hard work and sacrifices I’ve made are for my family. I hope my kids grow to be and do amazing things one day (amazing = anything meaningful) and never take anything for granted. This is a short journey we have on this planet-make every moment matter.

Do you have anything else you would like to share with our readers?

Beautiful surroundings matter for mental health. It’s a proven fact! Beauty can be found in nature, your home’s interiors, or witnessing a simple act of kindness. However simple or extravagant, surround yourself with beauty.
