I don’t know about you, but I am one of those lottery players who buys a ticket every once in awhile when I see there’s a big jackpot, and never checks the numbers… unless I am spring cleaning and happen to find it, in one of my handbags. I could have been a millionaire or winner so many times over. I am now discovering that what I thought to be madness at times (people spending hundreds of dollars a month or even week/day on tickets), is hardly anything but. I am now discovering that for some, playing the lottery is a business (I liken it to professional poker players), and for a select few extremely serious business. Who knew?

I did a little research (yes Google is always my go to), and found this in Wikipedia about something I am now discovering that participants consider a fine art.

Lottery wheeling (also known as lottery system, lottery wheel, lottery wheeling system) is used by individual players and syndicates to distribute a subset of the possible lottery numbers across multiple tickets to ensure that at least one of these tickets will contain a winning combination if several draws are in this subset. For example, in a pick 5 lottery, a lottery system with a subset of 9 selections and a “3 if 3” guarantee means that a 3-win payout is ensured when three of these 9 selections are among the five numbers drawn.

A lottery wheeling system acts as a single ticket in terms of a particular guarantee, but allows playing with a larger set of numbers than will be drawn in the lottery. In contrast, a single ticket in a pick 6 lottery guarantees a 4-win if four of the player’s numbers are drawn from a subset of only the six selections on that ticket. A lottery system with, say, 10 selections and the same guarantee would require at least 20 tickets but ensures a 4-win if four of the player’s numbers are drawn from a subset of ten selections. The term “wheeling” comes from the cyclic permutation method of construction, as in the following example: a “pick 6, 9 numbers, 4 if 5” guarantee system in 3 combinations, where the chosen subset are the integers 1 to 9:

This wheeling system defines three groups: A = {1 2 3}; B = {4 5 6}; and C = {7 8 9} and constructs the first ticket as AB, the second as BC and the third as CA. Any draw containing five of the numbers 1 through 9 will give at least one ticket with 4 of these numbers in it. We can confirm this by considering the possible distributions of the 5 numbers drawn among the three groups, and observing that there are always two groups that contain either all 5 or 4 of the 5 numbers drawn. Since any two groups are combined in a ticket, there will always be a 4-win or a 5-win. Difficulties greatly increase in constructing systems with more numbers and combinations. In mathematics, the study of these objects falls within the branch of combinatorial design. A lottery wheeling system has a basic guarantee (as in the examples above), but can have other, secondary guarantees.[1][2]

Lottery Wheels were in use in Europe and imported to Canada and the US in the 1970s. Wheeling systems usually try to guarantee a minimum number of wins given that draws fall in the set of the player’s numbers. From a mathematical standpoint ‘wheeling’ has no impact on the expected value of a given ticket, but reduces the payout variance across all tickets, compared to making independent random selections for each ticket (from the same subset of winning numbers). Smoothing out the wins in this way is popular in syndicates.[3] Wheeling can be bundled with lottery prediction software and other tools which supposedly improve the odds but are often based on the Gambler’s Fallacy or plain misunderstanding or misrepresentation of statistics

So apparently there are syndicates, software, profilers, etc.. Again, who knew? As far as I know, other than local lotteries (which are state regulated and specific) here in the US, different states participate in those big general lotteries (MEGA MILLIONS) and (POWERBALL) and each run 2x a week while local ones run daily. There are countless games, tickets, scratch-offs, etc.. I’m not sure about the science of it all, but I do enjoy watching that program My Lottery Dream Home on HGTV. It is so moving to see people purchase their dream homes, and I feel the excitement as if I am a part with each episode. In fact, I think most of the winners always win on scratch off (which would make this whole wheel thing a little obsolete in my humble opinion).

Speaking of which, when on my travels abroad, I always play the lottery. You can usually find a newsstand or shop close to any hotel or even downtown when shopping. I’ve bought tickets in Paris and Ireland among other places. One of my favorite places to visit is the UK and their major lottery is 49s.

Some believe that people who use wheeling systems have a 900% better chance of winning than people who don’t. They don’t guarantee you’ll hit the jackpot but many people have. When you use a wheeling system, you pick out a certain set of numbers such as 10 numbers you’ve handicapped.

In a 6 draw game, you need 6 to win the jackpot, but you also win with 3, 4 or 5 numbers. Depending on which wheeling system you’re using, you could have five winning tickets. If you have all 6 winning numbers, then the rest of your tickets will be 3, 4 and 5 number wins.

They’ve become popular for the serious lottery player and that’s how most are playing their games. When you learn how to wheel lottery numbers, your odds will drop dramatically. Most lottery winners handicap their numbers using a system.

3 Ways to Win With Wheeling Systems

1- Handicapped Numbers

To handicap numbers, you need to go through the past ten games. If you notice, there’s a pattern. Some are hot (numbers that come up a lot) and some are cold. (numbers that never or very seldom come up)

Pick the numbers that have been drawn the most and pick one cold number that has come up at least one time. If you’re playing a 10 number wheel, pick ten numbers. If you’re playing a pick 6 game, then split the numbers in half.

For instance, if the game has 40 numbers, the first half would be 1 through 20. and the second half would be 21 through 40. Pick half even and half odd. These are your handicapped numbers.

2- Wheeling System

There’s many different wheeling systems. You need to use one that fits your budget. The tighter the wheel, the more it will cost you. The looser it is, the less it will cost. There are free ones online and it will show how many combinations each one has. That way you’ll know what the cost would be.

Of course the more numbers you wheel, the better your chances are, but stay within your budget so you can play consistently. The wheel is the numbers you pick and the system is how the numbers are laid out and marked on your card.

3- Smart Luck

You’re playing with smart luck not dumb luck. Dumb luck is picking random numbers that increase your odds by the millions. That’s the way most people play. So don’t pick favorite numbers such as anniversaries, holidays or birthdays. Don’t play all odd or even numbers and don’t play numbers in a sequence such as 31-32-33-34 because they very seldom come up.

Smart luck is putting your system together with handicapped numbers, half even and half odd and using a history of the past ten draws. Plus, you’re using half low numbers and half high numbers. Doing that will drop your odds by over 900%.

Wheeling lottery numbers is fun, cheaper and the smartest way for anyone to play. It costs less to cover more numbers this way than it does playing them at random.

Try it and see for yourself. Be patient and use the same numbers every time you play. Ask any winner and they’ll tell you they used a system. You could be one some day too.
