Create Your Favorite Thanksgiving Feast Sides on the Grill!
Sweet potatoes are a Thanksgiving meal staple. While candied yams and sweet potato casserole are some of the more traditional ways to prepare this delicious side dish, have you ever thought about throwing those sweet spuds right over the open flame for a truly unique and enjoyable flavor? Grilling vegetables and starches gives them a unique flavor and can add a new spin on some of our old Thanksgiving Day staple dishes. And, if you are tailgating at one of the Thanksgiving Day games, this is a great way to bring a traditional dish out to the parking lot!
Ingredients for Grilled Sweet Potatoes:
- (3) sweet potatoes (not peeled)
- ¼ cup canola or olive oil
- ¼ cup fresh cilantro (finely chopped)
- 2 tsp. lime zest (grated finely)
- Pinch cayenne pepper
- Black pepper
Directions for Grilled Sweet Potatoes:
- Gather and prepare all of your ingredients for cooking.
- Pre-cook the potatoes before grilling to help speed up the cooking process. To do this, place sweet potatoes in a pot of boiling water and cook until the potatoes are fork tender. Remove potatoes from the water, drain and allow to cool.
- In a small bowl combine cayenne pepper, 1 tablespoon of salt and lime zest until well incorporated. Set aside for seasoning for the potatoes after grilling.
- Slice the potatoes into eighths lengthwise to form wedges. Brush each wedge liberally with canola or olive oil and season each wedge with salt and black pepper on all sides.
- Clean the grill grate and prepare the grill for cooking. Preheat the grill to a temperature of medium to medium-high or, if you wish to cook the sweet potatoes in a cast iron grill pan, place over grill great and heat to a medium temperature.
- If cooking potatoes directly on the grill grate, lightly brush the grate with olive oil or spray with grill grade cooking spray. Place the sweet potato wedges directly on the grill grate or into the cast iron pan and cook until cooked all the way through, usually 1 ½ minutes per side. Make sure to grill all sides, including the skin side of the wedges.
- Once cooked through, remove the potato wedges from the grill or pan and place on a serving platter. Immediately season with salt and cayenne mixture and sprinkle with chopped cilantro while the potatoes are still hot.
- Serve alongside your other Thanksgiving Day favorites and enjoy!
