Tidbits of My Truth by Ashley McFarlin Buie
Now then, just as the Lord promised, he has kept me alive for forty-five years since the time he said this to Moses, while Israel moved about in the wilderness. So here I am today, eighty-five years old! I am still as strong today as the day Moses sent me out; I’m just as vigorous to go out to battle now as I was then. Now give me this hill country that the Lord promised me that day. You yourself heard then that the Anakites were there and their cities were large and fortified, but, the Lord helping me, I will drive them out just as he said.
“Caleb. Oh dear Caleb.” That’s what’s I said after I read this. Caleb strikes a chord with me here because he is so very faithful. He is so very confident. He is so very sure…that he WILL receive what God has promised him. As a young man, God promised him the land he speaks of in the above scripture. Now at 85 years of age, he’s yet to receive it. Why? Funny. He doesn’t ask that. He simply reminds Joshua and his brethren that he is still of sound mind and body to receive it. Well, it is his, right?
Philippians 1:6, tells us “that God, who began the good work within you, will continue His work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.” This is a sentiment that we see evidenced in the life and vigor of Caleb, years before Paul even has a chance to write it to the people of Philippi. Caleb may be old, but he is not disillusioned. He has seen so much from the days of Moses to now serving Joshua. He KNOWS what God can do, and he is thankful that he has lived long enough to take what God has promised him.
