Far too often, weekends are spent on things like mowing lawns, doing household chores, and handling that ever-increasing pile of laundry. However, building memories with your kids and significant other ranks at the top of the list. If you are looking for a little more spontaneity and excitement from your weekend, here are five last-minute ideas for things to do with your family this weekend.

    1. Visit Family or Friends
One incredibly inexpensive way to build memories and strengthen your family relationships is to spend the weekend taking the kids to the grandparents for the weekend. This saves money on the expense of a hotel, and maybe even some meals. If your hosts live in another city, you might consider coordinating your travel plans with local festivals and events.

    2. Go Camping in a National Park
There is nothing like roughing it to build lasting memories with your children and deepen your appreciation for creature comforts back home. With the prevalence of national and state parks dotting our nation, there are tons of opportunities within a short distance from your home to guarantee your fun weekend is no more than a few hours away. With a tent, a cooler full of food, and a few sleeping bags, your family will enjoy long hikes, exploration, and sleeping under the stars.

    3. Play the Tourist
Although few people realize it, there are often tons of opportunities to see and experience something new in your very own city. However, it usually means changing your perspective. Challenge your family to pretend to be tourists and go sightseeing. Consider trying new restaurants or shops in a different neighborhood. Many cities offer all-access passes to museums, art galleries, and dozens of attractions for a low price.

    4. Go to The Beach
Another easy and affordable getaway, the beach makes for a classic choice. Whether you want to fly south for the warm weather this winter or love seafood, the beach makes for an excellent destination. Your family will love taking long walks on the beach, swimming, surfing, and bodyboarding, and delighting in everything the seaside has to offer. Even a beach on a lake or river provides plenty of recreation and relaxation for the whole family, often with affordable lodging options within a short walk from the water.

    5. Renaissance Fairs
Another great weekend activity for the whole family with the bonus of being educational for the young ones is renaissance fairs and Medieval Times exhibitions. These events offer an opportunity to glimpse historically accurate period costumes, jousting demonstrations, and the notion and romance of knights, lords, and kings. This allows children to understand another time’s life and culture, helping them make connections to things they are learning in school.
